Biography

James Davey is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Dalhousie University. He has a strong academic background with a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Ottawa and has completed several prestigious research fellowships, including a Research Fellow at Harvard Medical School and a Research Associate at the University of Ottawa. His current research focus lies in the areas of computational protein design, molecular modeling, and experimental protein engineering. A key aspect of his work involves synthetic biology and gene transcription, specifically exploring the crucial signaling mechanisms involved in epigenetic regulatory processes. Davey’s innovative research program aims to design and engineer new biotechnologies that facilitate targeted manipulation of epigenetic modifications in living systems. He applies a combination of computational and experimental strategies to engineer proteins that can recognize and alter DNA modifications with precision. The laboratory's efforts in developing methodologies for modeling and predicting protein properties, such as enzyme catalysis and gene regulation, are aimed at advancing the understanding and applications of genetic circuitry. In addition to his research, Professor Davey actively mentors undergraduate and graduate students who are interested in pursuing careers in computational protein design and synthetic biology.
