Biography

Dr. James Davis is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at Duke University, where he is also a practicing physician specializing in Internal Medicine. He serves as the Medical Director of the Duke Center for Smoking Cessation and the Director of the Duke Smoking Cessation Program. As a Co-Director of the Duke-UNC Tobacco Treatment Specialist Credentialing Program, his research primarily focuses on developing new pharmaceutical treatments for smoking cessation. His work includes being the principal investigator on several adaptive smoking cessation trials that explore new medications leveraging novel neurobiological mechanisms, including NMDA receptor antagonism and nicotinic receptor antagonism. Dr. Davis is also involved in trials concerning lung cancer screening, e-cigarettes, and nicotine alkaloids, as well as imaging and lung function trials. He leads the Duke Smoke-Free Policy Initiative and is a co-author of national tobacco dependence treatment guidelines, providing essential training in tobacco dependence treatment across various residency programs within the Duke School of Medicine and other disciplines.
