Biography

Jim Dearing studies the diffusion of innovations, adoption, and implementation of new evidence-based practices, programs, technologies, and policies. His research and teaching focus on dissemination science, implementation science, program sustainability, and the psychological and sociological bases of diffusion processes. Dearing works with research-practice improvement teams across various fields, including environmental remediation, nursing care, water conservation, injury fatality prevention, and public health. He has been a principal investigator on research grants from organizations such as the National Science Foundation, Environmental Protection Agency, National Cancer Institute, and private foundations like the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Dearing is a fellow of the International Communication Association and a member of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Board of Scientific Counselors. He has extensive experience, having worked for eight years as a co-investigator on a large Canadian research team involving nine universities and various provincial health authorities, aimed at improving nursing home care through evidence-based interventions. Currently, he leads research on climate change innovations in communities and assesses the implementation of Project ECHO across North America. Dearing has initiated collaboration with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on opioid prevention innovations.
