James Gerard Devaney is a Professor of International Law at the University of Glasgow. He studied law at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy, where he earned his PhD in 2015 and an LLM in 2012. He also holds an LLM with distinction from the University of Glasgow (2010) and an LL.B with honors from the University of Strathclyde (2009). He has held fellowships at the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and has taught in a visiting capacity at the University of Sydney, Australia, and the University of Kobe, Japan. He is an elected member of the Coordinating Committee of the European Society of International Law Interest Group on International Courts and Tribunals. His research interests primarily focus on public international law with a particular emphasis on international courts and tribunals, international legal reasoning, international dispute settlement, statehood and succession, and international investment law.
