Biography

James Dooner is an affiliate faculty member in the Department of Ophthalmology at Dell Medical School. He was born in Wisconsin and spent his high school years in Ireland. He graduated with distinction from the University of Rochester, earning a bachelor’s degree in neuroscience. He received his medical degree from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1991. Dooner completed his residency in ophthalmology and a fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He specializes in managing diseases of the retina, vitreous, and macula, such as macular holes, retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy, ocular trauma, and macular degeneration. As a principal investigator, he leads nationally recognized clinical research trials aimed at discovering newer and more effective surgical and pharmacological treatments for vitreoretinal pathologies. Beyond his clinical work, Dooner is dedicated to community service, contributing to educational seminars and lectures, and has played a significant role in advancing vitreoretinal care in developing countries. He is a board-certified ophthalmologist and a past-president of the Austin Ophthalmological Society, with memberships in several prestigious organizations including the American Society of Retina Specialists and the Texas Ophthalmology Association. Dooner has been recognized as one of Austin’s Super Doctors over the past decade, a distinguished honor awarded to the top 5% of ophthalmologists in the community.
