Biography

James Ellis completed his BSc at McGill University and obtained his PhD from the University of Toronto under the mentorship of Dr. Alan Bernstein, where he focused on developing retrovirus vectors for gene targeting. He pursued a Post-Doctoral Fellowship studying the beta-globin Locus Control Region with Dr. Frank Grosveld in London, UK. Since establishing his research team at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto in 1994, Dr. Ellis has focused on gene therapy for Sickle Cell Anemia. He has developed MECP2 vectors for Rett syndrome and vectors for reporter genes that mark specific cell types. For example, EOS vectors express specifically in pluripotent stem cells, aiding in the generation of patient-induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells. Dr. Ellis's lab collaborates on modeling Rett syndrome, Autism Spectrum Disorders, and cardiomyopathies using iPS cells. His current research direction emphasizes post-transcriptional regulation in human neurodevelopment. He also serves as the Research Integrity Advisor at the Hospital for Sick Children.
