Dr. James Fogarty

Biography

Associate Professor James Fogarty is a highly experienced microeconomist. His personal research focus includes water use economics, urban agricultural settings, and alcohol markets, including the analysis of externalities and alcohol policy. He also investigates consumer food demand and the economics of the horticulture sector, with a particular emphasis on the wine grape sector. Known as a passionate educator, James is actively engaged in supervising Master's and PhD students on a wide array of topics within the broad fields of Environmental Economics, Management, Agricultural Economics, and Agribusiness. He has received University Excellence Teaching Awards for his contributions to teaching and has developed training courses available through the Commonwealth Microcredential Marketplace. His contributions extend to high school student engagement through programs such as UWA+ Starter Course. Prior to joining UWA, he held several senior leadership positions, including a term as Head of School, and has actively contributed to university governance through roles on the Academic Board, Academic Council, and UWA Senate. James currently serves as the custodian of the teaching and research vineyard at UWA Field Station, and his expertise in economics is regularly sought after by government departments and the private sector, providing consultancy services through UWA Consulting. Additionally, James is involved in multiple research projects focused on sustainable agriculture and water management, collaborating with various stakeholders in the field.
