James Fullerton studied Experimental Psychology at Oxford University (New College) before proceeding to study Medicine at the University of Birmingham, where he received a Gold Medal and Chancellors Prize. He undertook the majority of his clinical training through the NIHR Integrated Academic Training pathway at University College London Hospital. James completed his PhD at the University College London (UCL) in 2015, in the laboratory of Professor Derek Gilroy, focusing on the role of inflammation-induced eicosanoids in innate immune suppression. Following his doctorate, James worked as a post-doctoral researcher and NIHR Clinical Lecturer, engaging in fellowships at the George Institute for Global Health in Sydney and at GlaxoSmithKline’s early phase facility in Cambridge. In 2020, he moved to Oxford as the Deputy Head of the Centre for Precision Healthcare at UCL. Currently, he balances his roles as a Principal Investigator at the University and an Acute General Medicine Physician and Clinical Pharmacologist at John Radcliffe Hospital. His research emphasizes the practical translation of experimental medicine studies to enhance patient benefit, focusing on the development of human immune challenge models. Clinically, he is interested in host immune responses to inflammatory stimuli and their implications for acute care. Additionally, he is actively involved in medical education at Oxford University Medical School and supervises DPhil/PhD students.
