Biography

James H. Garrett Jr. is the provost and chief academic officer at Carnegie Mellon University, where he also holds the position of Thomas Lord Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering. He became provost after serving as the dean of the College of Engineering from January 2013 to December 2018. Garrett previously headed the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering from June 2006 to December 2012. He is a founding co-director of the Pennsylvania Smarter Infrastructure Incubator, which is focused on improving infrastructure systems through data analytics and intelligent decision support. Notably, he served as the co-chief editor for the ASCE Journal of Computing in Civil Engineering from 2008 to 2013. Prior to his tenure at Carnegie Mellon, he was an assistant professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Garrett has received numerous accolades for his contributions to the field, including the Alexander von Humboldt Research Prize in 2012. His research intersects with sensor applications in civil infrastructure, data mining, machine learning, and supporting tools for engineering standards and specifications. With over 60 refereed journal articles and multiple awards, Garrett is a recognized leader in his domain.
