Biography

James (Jim) Gern is a tenured professor and Vice Chair of Research in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He leads the NIH-supported Wisconsin Allergy Research Fellowship Training Program and is an elected member of the American Pediatric Society and the American Association of Physicians, as well as a member of the AOA Medical Honor Society. Throughout his career, Gern has received several honors, including the Distinguished Physician Alumnus Award from the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine and the Distinguished Scientist Award from the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. He also has a significant role in research, holding a full-time researcher position with an affiliate appointment in the Department of Medicine. His research primarily focuses on the causes of childhood allergic diseases and asthma through various studies that assess early life exposures in diverse environments. He is a principal investigator in the NIH Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) program and leads studies that analyze home and neighborhood exposures in relation to immune development, aiming to identify the underlying causes of asthma.
