Biography

James E. Goldman, MD, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Pathology and Cell Biology at Columbia University and Director of the Neuropathology Fellowship Program at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center. He specializes in neuro-pathology, focusing on the development, function, and pathology of CNS glial cells. His research investigates how astrocytes respond to pathological changes and how these changes impact CNS cells. Goldman collaborates with multiple researchers to explore gene expression in single cells from patients with neurological diseases, including Huntington's disease and Parkinson's disease. His lab uses advanced techniques such as single nucleus RNA sequencing to study transcriptional differences in various neurological disorders. Goldman has been active in research related to neuropathology observed in autopsies of individuals who died from SARS-CoV-2 infections, discovering amyloid depositions similar to those found in Alzheimer's disease. He is involved in numerous NIH-funded research projects aimed at elucidating neurological disease mechanisms.
