Dr. James Gould

Biography

James M. Gould specializes in providing counsel in pharmaceutical and biotech sectors at Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney. Professor Gould has held high-level positions for over 20 years at Merck & Co. and Schering-Plough, serving as Legal Director at Merck, where he handled global intellectual property litigation, patent prosecution, technology transfer, and licensing issues that interface with both patent law and FDA law. He continues to specialize in areas at Buchanan, focusing on cases involving pharmaceuticals, biologics, and biotech process technology. Throughout his career, Professor Gould has managed complex pharmaceutical and biotech cases involving antivirals, vaccines, monoclonal antibodies, anticancer agents, antibiotics, recombinant proteins, inhaled steroids, antihistamines, and gene therapy. He has enforced patents in litigation across Europe, Latin America, and Asia, having been stationed at Schering-Plough’s European headquarters in Switzerland for several years as Director of European Patent Operations. With trial experience at the United States International Trade Commission, he served as an Investigative Attorney during his career and speaks on topics related to pharmaceutical biotech patent law and litigation at international conferences. Professor Gould is a registered patent attorney and holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Cornell University, a Master of Science degree in Biotechnology from Johns Hopkins University, and a law degree from Penn State Dickinson Law.
