Biography

James Harper is a specialist in European art of the seventeenth century, holding a PhD in History of Art from the University of Pennsylvania. His research focuses on the intersection of art and politics, covering significant topics such as monumental biographical imagery as a form of propaganda, the materiality and meaning of tapestry, the portrayal of the 'Turk' in western art, and the high baroque painter Pietro da Cortona, alongside the reception of art and architecture during the era of the Grand Tour.
