Biography

James Hone is the Wang Fong-Jen Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Columbia University, where he also serves as the Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. His research focuses on the creation and study of nanoscale materials and structures, particularly two-dimensional materials such as graphene. Over the past decade, Hone's work has advanced the understanding and applications of atomically thin sheets, which are known for their remarkable strength and unique electronic properties. His collaborations have led to innovative techniques for manipulating these materials to form layered heterostructures, exploring intrinsic properties that arise from environmental conditions, and developing high-performance electrical and optical devices. Hone's interdisciplinary approach includes working with biologists to develop new tools that uncover how cells perceive and respond to their physical surroundings at a sub-micrometer scale. He has received numerous accolades, including being recognized as a Highly Cited Researcher in both Materials Science and Physics from Clarivate and receiving the James P. McGroddy Prize for New Materials from the American Physical Society in 2023.
