Biography

Dr. Hoxie's lab focuses on identifying viral cellular determinants relevant to the ability of HIV and SIV to infect cells and evade host immune responses. Their research explores various areas including the role HIV/SIV cytoplasmic tail plays in pathogenesis, CD4-independent isolates of HIV, the production of modified HIV envelope glycoproteins for vaccine studies, and gene therapy approaches using fusion inhibitory peptides. His lab discovered endocytosis signals in the cytoplasmic tails of HIV and SIV envelope proteins which reduce envelope expression on the surface of infected cells. Ongoing studies aim to understand mechanisms of attenuation regarding SIV model viruses and to characterize components of the host immune response. They also investigate the structural basis of CD4-independent isolates that utilize chemokine receptors for entry, and derive envelope glycoproteins to elicit broadly neutralizing antibodies. In addition, they explore the role of modified CXCR4 inhibitory proteins currently under evaluation in human trials, assessing their effects on subjects receiving modified T cells. Dr. Hoxie's thorough research contributes significantly to the understanding of HIV biology and therapeutic interventions.
