Biography

Jim Hughes is a Professor of Comparative Politics and the Director of the Conflict Research Group at the London School of Economics (LSE). Since joining LSE in 1994, he has advanced through the ranks from Lecturer to Professor. His research is particularly focused on violent political conflict and terrorism, as well as the complexities of post-conflict reconciliation. His extensive work examines issues of democratization, secession, and national and ethnic conflicts, especially in the context of the Soviet Union and the Balkans, as well as the role of the European Union in Eastern Europe. Hughes has authored nine books and over fifty academic articles and chapters, with significant works including “Rethinking Reconciliation: Transitional Justice in Conflict” and “EU Conflict Management.” He earned a BSc from Queen's University Belfast and completed his PhD at LSE, which involved extensive fieldwork in Siberia and study of Soviet archives. His consultancy experience spans various sectors, advising governments and international organizations, and he has led major research projects funded by the UK Economic and Social Research Council and the European Union.
