Biography

Professor James Keeler is the Head of the Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry at the University of Cambridge, a role he began on 1 October 2018. He aims to continue the work of his predecessors in fostering the success and ambition of the department, ensuring it remains an excellent place for both work and study. Prior to becoming Head of the Department, Keeler spent years as the Director of Teaching, holding overall responsibility for delivering the undergraduate chemistry course. His own teaching focuses on introductory physical and theoretical chemistry, including topics such as thermodynamics, high-resolution spectroscopy, and elementary group theory. His research interests lie in high-resolution nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, particularly in the development and application of new techniques. He has co-authored the eleventh edition of "Atkins’ Physical Chemistry" and written several other textbooks in general and NMR chemistry. Keeler is currently recruiting postdoctoral researchers, PhD students, and summer visitors to his research group.
