Biography

James Lawrence is a Reader in Geological Engineering at Imperial College London, where he specializes in upper Cretaceous carbonate geology (Chalk) and rock engineering using remote sensing techniques like InSAR. His research focuses on supporting civil infrastructure and the energy sector while addressing climate change impacts. James has been involved in multiple major infrastructure projects including HS2, Thames Tideway, and the Lower Thames Crossing, as well as the nuclear power lifecycle from construction to decommissioning and the eventual disposal of radioactive waste in Geological Disposal Facilities (GDF). He obtained his MSc in Mineral Resources from Cardiff University, and began his career as a geologist in the petroleum industry before transitioning to academia. James has worked at the University of Brighton and the University of Leeds, where he developed an expertise in engineering properties of chalk coastal environments. He has authored over 50 publications and has successfully led 30 research projects while supervising 20 research students. James teaches Rock Engineering, Soils Engineering, and Geology at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and he organizes field trips to the UK and Greece. He also serves as the Vice Chair of the British Geotechnical Association and is on the editorial board of the Quarterly Journal of Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology.
