Biography

James Leduc is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Faculty of History at the University of Cambridge. He has a background in early modern Ireland and Britain, focusing on political theology, sovereignty, empire, and the Renaissance Reformations. He completed his Master's degree at Concordia University, Montréal in 2017, and earned his Ph.D. from Trinity College Dublin in 2021. Following this, he spent a year as a research assistant before starting his current position as a Postdoctoral Researcher in September 2022. Leduc's research analyzes how certain forms of historical writing and thought have shaped the understanding of concepts such as divine and human sovereignty, as well as the implications of these ideas for various facets of life and the world. His interests lie in the longue durée relationship between state formation, empire, and modern political secularism, and he explores themes relating to political theology, the Renaissance Reformations, and historical thought.
