Jim Best’s current research focuses on mechanics of sediment transport, investigating modern sedimentary environments, and interpreting ancient alluvium. His ongoing research includes studying the interactions between turbulent flows and sediment movement, the modulation of turbulence in sedimentological flows, bedform dynamics, and braided river dynamics and deposits. Additionally, he explores morphodynamics of river channel confluences, sedimentology of large rivers, and the application of multibeam imaging in sedimentary environments. He also works on basin evolution and paleoenvironments, with a specific focus on the sedimentology of the Western Irish Namurian Basin.
