Jim Best’s current research concerns the mechanics of sediment transport, investigation of modern sedimentary environments, and interpretation of ancient alluvium. His ongoing research includes interactions of turbulent flows with sediment movement, turbulence modulation of sedimentological flows, bedform dynamics, and braided river dynamics. He studies the deposits and morphodynamics of river channel confluences, sedimentology of large rivers, and the application of multibeam imaging in sedimentary environments. His work also delves into basin evolution and paleoenvironments, particularly focusing on the sedimentology of the Western Irish Namurian Basin.
