Biography

James Lloyd is a Professor in the Department of Astronomy at Cornell University, holding a joint appointment in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. He completed his Ph.D. in Astrophysics at the University of California, Berkeley, in 2002, and his M.A. at the same institution in 2000. He also obtained a B.Sc. (Honours Class) in Physics from the University of New South Wales in 1994. Professor Lloyd has been a Fulbright scholar and was awarded the Robert Millikan Prize during his postdoctoral fellowship at the California Institute of Technology. His research interests focus on extrasolar planets and the development of astronomical instrumentation. He has expertise in infrared detectors, adaptive optics, interferometry, coronagraphy, high contrast imaging, and precision radial velocity measurements. Notably, he has wintered at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station and received the Navy Antarctica Service Medal Gold Winterover Bar. Lloyd is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and has served on various panels, including the Astro 2010 Decadal Survey and NASA's WFIRST Independent Evaluation Technical Review boards. His current research at Cornell involves studying the properties of extrasolar planets using data from the Kepler and GALEX missions, alongside developing ground and space-based instruments to detect and characterize these planets.
