James Lloyd is a Professor at Cornell University in the Department of Astronomy and the Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. His research focuses on the development of instrumentation and experimental techniques to study extrasolar planets through adaptive optics interferometry. Lloyd spent two years at the South Pole working on the South Pole Infrared Explorer (SPIREX), a 60 cm telescope that characterized properties of infrared astronomy and obtained some of the deepest near-infrared images of galaxies. He has developed instrumentation for the Lick laser guide star adaptive optics system and the InfraRed Camera Adaptive optics Lick (IRCAL). As the architect of the coronagraph Lyot project commissioned with the Air Force 3.6m telescope in March 2004, he created a coronagraph linked to a powerful adaptive optics system, allowing entries into a new regime for searching for planets and debris disks around nearby stars. Part of a larger collaboration, Lloyd is also involved in designing an “Extreme” adaptive optics system for direct imaging of extrasolar planets with 10 meter class telescopes, and his current research focuses on synthesizing techniques to achieve precision image reconstruction and accurate calibration of adaptive optics data.
