Biography

James Loxley is a Professor of Early Modern Literature at the University of Edinburgh. He has completed his PhD at Royal Holloway, University of London, and has held a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Leeds for three years before his appointment at Edinburgh. His scholarly focus includes renaissance poetry and drama, with particular emphasis on the works of Ben Jonson and Andrew Marvell, as well as the literature of the civil war period. Loxley has published on the philosophy of Thomas Hobbes and contemporary literary theory, especially issues surrounding performativity in literature, influenced by the work of Stanley Cavell. In recent years, he has led several research projects funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the Royal Society of Edinburgh. He serves as a Trustee and Board Member of the Edinburgh UNESCO City of Literature Trust and is an affiliate of the Edinburgh Futures Institute. He welcomes PhD supervision enquiries in areas related to Renaissance and early modern literature, particularly regarding poetry, drama, performativity, queer theory, and digital literary studies.
