Biography

James Mahoney is a comparative-historical researcher with interests in political development, Latin America, and methodology. His influential works include 'Advances in Comparative-Historical Analysis' (2015, coedited with Kathleen Thelen), 'A Tale of Cultures: Qualitative and Quantitative Research in the Social Sciences' (2012, with Gary Goertz), and 'Colonialism and Postcolonial Development: A Spanish American Comparative Perspective' (2010). His book 'Explaining Institutional Change: Ambiguity, Agency, Power' (2010, coedited with Kathleen Thelen) has been pivotal in the field. Mahoney has received multiple awards from the American Sociological Association and the American Political Science Association for his contributions to methodology. He has served as President of the Qualitative Multi-Method Research Section and Chair of the Comparative Historical Sociology Section at the APSA. Currently, he holds the position of Associate Chair in Political Science and Chair of Sociology at Northwestern University.
