Biography

James McCormac is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Warwick. He obtained his PhD from Queen's University, Belfast in 2012, where he prototyped the Generation Transit Survey (NGTS). He worked from 2009-2014 as a Telescope Operator Support Astronomer at ING in La Palma, before joining Warwick as a postdoc focusing on NGTS operations from 2014 to 2018. Since then, he has concentrated on the PLATO Data Centre, where his efforts are directed towards removing systematic noise from the PLATO mission data. His research interests lie primarily in the areas of transiting exoplanets and space domain awareness. He collaborates with team members on various projects, including developments in optical parallax techniques for satellite orbit characterization. As part of his teaching duties, he develops undergraduate lab experiments to train students in observational astronomy techniques. McCormac is engaged in ongoing research efforts that involve the analysis of light curves from various telescopes to enhance the detection of astrophysical signals and to improve satellite tracking methodologies.
