Biography

Celebrated Vancouver biomedical engineer, James McEwen’s leadership expertise has spread far across the Lower Mainland, benefitting Canadians and people worldwide. Known for the microprocessor-controlled automatic surgical tourniquet system he invented, Dr. McEwen and his team developed numerous medical devices that changed the way health care is delivered in Canada and internationally. The tourniquet system is standard equipment in operating rooms worldwide, used in an estimated 20,000 surgical procedures each day. He works to protect patients by improving the precision, speed, and safety of surgery. As a UBC alumnus, Dr. McEwen is considered one of the founders of the Canadian biomedical engineering industry, having helped establish medical technology companies and served as a driving force in the creation of biomedical engineering programs at the University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University. James McEwen was appointed to the Order of British Columbia, the highest form of recognition in the province, in 2021.
