Dr. James Mclellan

Biography

Dr. James McLellan is a Professor and Academic Director at Queen's University. He holds degrees from Queen's University, where he completed his Bachelor's degree in Mathematics Engineering (Process Control option) in 1981, and a PhD in Chemical Engineering in 1990. His research interests include functional data analysis, real-time optimization, fault detection, and process control, focusing on the development of advanced parameter estimation tools and modeling techniques for chemical processes. He emphasizes the use of nonlinear models derived from fundamental energy and material balances. Dr. McLellan is involved in research initiatives such as PLASTICS CREATE, which aims to advance sustainable plastic systems, integrating interdisciplinary training and life cycle analysis. He has authored numerous publications in esteemed journals and has been recognized with various teaching awards, including the Smith Engineering Leadership Teaching Award in 2023. He brings extensive experience from both academia and industry, having worked as a Control Applications Engineer and held various teaching positions at Queen's University. McLellan is also actively engaged in mentoring graduate students, guiding them in their research and professional development.
