Dr. James Meadowcroft

Biography

James Meadowcroft is a professor at Carleton University, situated in the School of Public Policy and Administration. He has extensively engaged in research on sustainable energy transitions, public policy, and environmental politics. His academic lineage includes a Bachelor of Arts from McGill University and a Doctorate from the University of Oxford. During his tenure, he completed a 14-year term as a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair focused on governance and sustainable development. His writings cover diverse topics, including democratic participation, deliberative democracy, and national sustainable development strategies. More recently, his research has emphasized the energy transition towards a low-carbon society, addressing intricate issues such as carbon capture and storage, smart grids, and the development of Ontario's electricity system. His expertise is supported by funding from several prestigious institutions, including the UK Economic and Social Research Council, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council. Incorporating interdisciplinary approaches, he has supervised PhD students working on a myriad of environment and energy-related issues, encompassing North American air pollution and the politics surrounding biofuels.
