James Moreno’s current research examines the multiple complementary and antagonistic relationships in contemporary dance, devising, and physical theatre. He explores the cultural and ideological traditions of the genre to inform practitioners in developing techniques and approaches that reveal culturally specific compositional practices and performance values across genres. As a choreographer, deviser, and dance scholar, James is fascinated by the ways people use performance to create meaning, build communities, and respond to social structures. His choreography and cross-disciplinary work have been presented both nationally and internationally. As a dancer, James has performed in the works of iconic mid-twentieth-century choreographers such as José Limón, Martha Graham, and Merce Cunningham, as well as in pieces by leading contemporary choreographers like Lucinda Childs, Zvi Gotheiner, and Hwai-min Lin from Cloudgate Dance Theatre. Having completed his PhD in Performance Studies from Northwestern University, James also had a Fulbright to teach at the University of Panamá in Panamá City, Panamá, where he choreographed and taught at the National School of Dance of Panamá.
