James Noonan is the Albert E. Kent Professor of Genetics and Neuroscience at Yale School of Medicine. He completed his undergraduate studies in Biology and English Literature at Binghamton University, followed by graduate work in the Department of Genetics at Stanford University, where he was awarded a Ph.D. in 2004. He then pursued postdoctoral research at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the U.S. Department of Energy Joint Genome Institute. Dr. Noonan joined the faculty at Yale in September 2007, and has been actively engaged in research focused on embryonic and fetal development, epigenomics, and the evolution of gene regulatory networks. His laboratory has contributed significantly to the understanding of human-specific regulatory elements and their roles in development. Key studies include the identification of human accelerative regions (HARs) that influence developmental gene expression and the examination of gene regulatory functions in the evolution of the human brain. Dr. Noonan has also explored the genetic underpinnings of neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism, and has leveraged massively parallel screening approaches to characterize gene regulatory functions that impact human cortical development.
