Professor Dr. James Ntambi

Biography

James Ntambi is a Professor in the Biochemistry department at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. His laboratory combines metabolic research with contemporary techniques in genetics, metabolomics, and lipidomics, utilizing mouse gene knockout technology to decipher the mechanisms of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism in the context of health and disease. He has extensively researched adipocyte differentiation and the hormonal and dietary regulation of gene expression. In recent years, he has adopted a multidisciplinary approach to elucidate the physiological roles of stearoyl-CoA desaturase genes in lipid and carbohydrate metabolism. His current studies involve the use of transgenic mouse models to investigate the impact of dietary fatty acid composition on metabolic processes. His recent work has highlighted the significance of monounsaturated fatty acids in diet-induced de novo lipogenesis, as well as their connections to obesity, insulin resistance, and diabetes. Moreover, he aims to translate his animal model findings into practical applications for human health, collaborating with pharmaceutical companies to develop therapeutic drugs for treating obesity, diabetes, and cancer.
