Biography

Jim Pipe, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Radiology at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. He serves as the Director of the High Value MRI initiative and leads the Magnetic Resonance Technology Use Design (MRTUD) group. He holds both a Bachelor's and a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, as well as a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Michigan. Jim is a Fellow and former President (2015-2016) of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM), an organization dedicated to innovative research and clinical applications in magnetic resonance. He has chaired the ISMRM annual meeting in 2012 and has organized multiple international workshops focused on data sampling and image reconstruction. His research is centered on designing MRI technology that positively impacts patient care, placing a strong emphasis on signal processing techniques. Notably, he invented the PROPELLER method, designed to eliminate blurring due to patient movement during MRI scans, which is used in millions of exams each year. He continues to contribute to the development of next-generation Spiral MRI methods to enhance efficiency and broaden access to MRI technology. Jim advocates for the integration of technology and design in a manner that maximizes value in MRI for improved patient outcomes and safety.
