Biography

James Rann, known as Jamie, is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Glasgow in the School of Modern Languages and Cultures. His academic work focuses on Russophone modernist literature, particularly Futurism in the contexts of the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union. He has authored the book 'Unlikely Futurist' (2020), which investigates originality in avant-garde poetry from 1910 to 1930, and explores the influences of Russian modernism on Scottish literature and translation. Rann has contributed articles for The Guardian and has been involved in various research projects related to contemporary Eastern European studies, including workshops for Ukrainian refugees in Glasgow. His current research explores themes of intertextuality in Russian poetry and the implications of cultural identity in early Soviet literature. Rann also supervises several PhD projects focusing on significant literary figures and translation studies. He is co-convener of research clusters within the School of Modern Languages and Cultures, and is a member of the Advisory Board for the Edwin Morgan Trust.
