James Ridsdill-Smith received a BA in Natural Sciences (Economics) from the University of Cambridge in 1964 and went on to earn an MSc in 1968 and a PhD in 1974 from the University of New England, both in Entomology. He joined CSIRO Entomology in 1964 and worked in Perth from 1977 to 2006. He has held significant roles within the Australian Entomological Society, including Vice-President from 1998 to 1992 and President from 2002 to 2004. Ridsdill-Smith was elected to the International Congress of Entomology Executive from 2008 to 2016. He served as a Visiting Professor at Northwest Agricultural University in China from 2012 to 2015. His research focuses on the feeding and reproductive behavior of insects and mites, particularly in relation to pasture insects. He has co-edited books on insect reproduction and dung beetles, and he is currently involved in projects that enhance ecosystem services and pest control outcomes in Australia.
