Biography

Dr. James Rini obtained his Ph.D. from the Department of Medical Biophysics at the University of Toronto, where he determined one of the first x-ray crystal structures of a protein-carbohydrate complex. Following his doctoral studies, he conducted postdoctoral research at the Scripps Research Institute with Dr. Ian Wilson, where his work on antiviral antibodies led to the discovery of new principles of immune recognition. As an independent researcher, Dr. Rini has established an international reputation for his contributions in the areas of protein-carbohydrate interactions, animal lectins, and glycosyltransferase structure and mechanism. He has authored several important reviews and contributed to the popular textbook 'Essentials of Glycobiology'. His research encompasses three main areas: glycosyltransferases and their role in ER Quality Control processes, human coronavirus-receptor interactions focusing on host specificity and immune evasion, and carbohydrate engineering to improve therapeutic antibodies using modifications to N-glycans.
