James Ritcey joined the University of Washington Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (UW ECE) in 1985 after completing his Ph.D. in electrical engineering (communication theory systems) at the University of California, San Diego. Prior to joining UW, he worked on airborne electronic systems and communications radar at General Electric. At UW, Ritcey has worked extensively in various areas of statistical signal processing, particularly array signal processing, radar, underwater acoustics, wireless communications, and network security, specifically within the context of 5G technologies. His research interests include Massive MIMO and computational methods for network security. He has received funding from the Office of Naval Research (ONR), the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Army Research Office (ARO), and the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC), and has consulted for numerous tech companies in the greater Seattle area. In recognition of his contributions to the field, he was awarded the IEEE Fellow status in 2011. Ritcey has been actively involved in professional organizations, serving on the Steering Committee for the Asilomar Conference on Signals, Systems, and Computers, and as General Chair for the IEEE International Conference on Communications. He has also directed both undergraduate and graduate programs within the Department of Electrical Engineering and served as Associate Chair for Education from 2006 to 2011. He received the UW ECE Chair’s Award for his role in founding the UW Electrical Engineering Professional Masters Program.
