Biography

James S. Roberts is an Associate Professor in the School of Psychology at Georgia Institute of Technology. He received his Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology, Quantitative from the University of South Carolina in 1995. His research interests focus on general psychometrics, item response theory, unfolding models, multidimensional scaling, and applied statistics. As the Quantitative Psychology Program Coordinator, he has contributed significantly to the development and application of item response theory (IRT) models for measuring psychological constructs. Over the past decades, he has developed family polytomous IRT models that unfold responses to test questionnaire items. These models help assess attitudes and preferences using responses from traditional Likert and Thurstone scales and measure individual personality differences during developmental processes. His work has gained recognition through various awards, including the National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award. Additionally, he has contributed to the development of computer software, GGUM2004, which is utilized by researchers worldwide for estimating parameters using the generalized graded unfolding model.
