Biography

James Rothwell is a Professor of Physical Geography at the University of Manchester, specializing in environmental pollution, hydrology, and the dynamics of heavy metals in peatlands. He completed his PhD in Geography at the University of Manchester in 2006, which focused on the release of legacy heavy metals from eroding peatlands in the Peak District National Park. His academic career includes a fixed-term lectureship at the same university and postdoctoral research at Manchester Metropolitan University. Since returning to the University of Manchester in 2008, he has significantly contributed to the field, being promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2014, Reader in 2017, and Professor in 2019. He has published over 50 peer-reviewed articles and secured around £15 million in research grants from various prominent institutions such as the NERC and the European Commission. His research interests include applying green infrastructure to urban challenges, investigating microplastics in the environment, and understanding heavy metal cycling in peatlands. Additionally, James has held several leadership roles within his department, including Director of MSc Green Infrastructure.
