Dr. James Rush

Biography

James W.E. Rush is a Professor in the Kinesiology and Health Sciences Department at the University of Waterloo. His research primarily explores cardiovascular physiology, focusing on the regulation of blood vessel function and the signaling pathways involved in endothelial and vascular smooth muscle cell interactions. His interests center on how factors such as hypertension, aging, and exercise influence blood vessel health. In particular, his recent work has investigated the roles of endothelium-derived contracting factors and the vascular effects of the polyphenol resveratrol found in red wine. He aims to elucidate the mechanisms that enhance vascular function to prevent disease and maintain cardiovascular health. Beyond his research, he has held multiple leadership roles, including Vice-President and Academic Provost at the University of Waterloo, and Dean and Associate Dean in the Faculty of Health. He also has extensive teaching expertise in cardiovascular physiology, blood vessel health, and related areas.
