Dr. James Saiers

Biography

James E. Saiers is a Clifton R. Musser Professor at the Yale School of the Environment, specializing in Hydrology. His research focuses on water quality and supply, examining how human activities influence the chemical composition of drinking water resources and alter freshwater flows in aquifers, wetlands, and river basins. Recent studies have addressed the water quality impacts of fossil fuel development, the transport of carbon and nutrients in watersheds, and the behavior of radionuclides in groundwater, as well as carbon dioxide removal through enhanced rock weathering. Professor Saiers collaborates with students, postdoctoral associates, and faculty to conduct this research. His teaching emphasizes both applied and theoretical aspects of hydrology, preparing students to tackle critical issues related to water quality and water supply. Saiers employs mathematical modeling and experimental approaches in collaboration with ecologists, geochemists, engineers, and epidemiologists to develop predictive strategies for water-resource management aimed at protecting freshwater ecosystems and public health. His courses encompass key elements of physical and chemical hydrology, fostering connections among various scientific disciplines.
