Biography

Jim Scanlan received a materials science degree from Manchester University in 1977. He spent 12 years in the aerospace industry in various roles, with his final position as Head of Manufacturing Research at BAe regional aircraft. While at BAe, Jim studied for his MSc in aerospace design at Salford University, which was sponsored by British Aerospace, and he participated in a year-long Cranfield University manufacturing management fellowship programme. In 1990, Jim joined the University of the West of England and completed his PhD in 1995, focusing on computer modelling of the Aerospace Design Process. In September 2004, he accepted a position at the University of Southampton as the director of the Computational Engineering Design Centre. Jim manages several research programmes sponsored by BAE Systems, Airbus, and Rolls-Royce, with particular interests in Design, Logistics, and Simulation Optimisation. He is involved in running multiple MSc courses within the Aerospace IGDS MSc programme. Additionally, Jim created a spin-off business aimed at utilizing research in design process modelling. He is also an avid squash player and has a Private Pilot's Licence to fly a Piper Warrior aircraft.
