Dr. James Slater

Biography

James N. Slater is the Robert Marc Bell Professor of Cardiology at NYU Grossman School of Medicine and a leading expert in interventional cardiology. With over 30 years of experience, he has dedicated his career to advancing the field of cardiology through innovative research and patient-centered care. Dr. Slater specializes in using minimally invasive techniques to treat common cardiac conditions, particularly heart valve diseases and obstructive coronary diseases. His pioneering work has revolutionized the treatment of myocardial infarction, significantly reducing hospital mortality rates. He has contributed to the development of catheter-based therapies for severe aortic stenosis and mitral regurgitation, offering patients safer alternatives to open-heart surgery. As the director of the Structural Heart Program at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, he has improved visualization techniques in interventional procedures, enhancing their effectiveness. Dr. Slater has also played a key role in clinical trials focusing on structural heart diseases and has mentored numerous medical students and fellows, driven by his passion for improving patient care in cardiology. He completed his MD at the University of Rochester, followed by comprehensive postgraduate training, including residency and fellowship at NYU Langone Bellevue Hospital Center.
