Dr. James Spall

Biography

James C. Spall is a Research Professor in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics at Johns Hopkins University. He is also the chair of the Applied Computational Mathematics Program and co-chair of the Data Science Program at the Whiting School of Engineering. Spall is a distinguished member of the principal professional staff at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. His research focuses on stochastic systems, parameter estimation, stochastic optimization, Monte Carlo methods, neural networks, control systems, system identification, Kalman filtering, mathematical statistics, optimization theory, and uncertainty calculation. Spall has published extensively in the areas of control and statistics, including several books, and holds U.S. patents for inventions in control systems. He has received numerous awards for his research publications, including being named a Fellow of the IEEE and a member of the American Statistical Association. He is also a fellow of the engineering honor society Tau Beta Pi and was awarded the EP Excellence Teaching Award in 2006, as well as the Professor Joel Dean Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics in May 2017.
