Dr. James Steele

Biography

James Steele is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Southern California, recognized as an ACSA Distinguished Professor. He has an extensive academic background with a BA in English from Lafayette College, a Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) and Master of Architecture (M.Arch) from the University of Pennsylvania, and a Ph.D. from USC's School of Policy Planning and Development. With over 50 authored books and monographs, his significant works include 'Ecological Architecture: Critical History' and 'Contemporary Japanese Architecture: Tracing Generation,' published by Routledge & Kegan Paul. Steele has contributed to various architectural programs and initiatives, including serving as the lead architect for the Birchwood Conservancy's World Heritage Animal Genetic Repository and initiating summer programs for architecture students abroad. His research focuses on ecological practices in architecture, and he has presented at international forums, including the 4th Annual Cultural Heritage Forum in Saudi Arabia and the IASTE Conference in Kuala Lumpur. Additionally, he received a Fulbright Scholar’s Grant for the study of Minangkabau architecture in Indonesia and has engaged with UNESCO on significant projects in architecture preservation.
