Biography

James Tao, MD, PhD, is a neurologist specializing in seizures and epilepsy at the University of Chicago, where he directs the Adult Epilepsy Center and the Clinical Neurophysiology Laboratory. His clinical interests include Cerebral Cavernous Malformation, Clinical Neurophysiology, EEG, Epilepsy, Seizures, and Vagal Nerve Stimulation (VNS). Dr. Tao has a particular focus on minimally invasive surgery techniques such as laser ablation for medically resistant epilepsy. His research employs electrophysiology and neuroimaging to localize seizure focal points for guiding epilepsy surgery, as well as investigating mechanisms to prevent sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP), a leading cause of mortality in patients with chronic uncontrolled epilepsy. He has published work in notable journals including JAMA, Neurology, and Epilepsia. In addition to his research, Dr. Tao is active in education, supervising medical students, residents, and fellows, and he directs a clinical neurophysiology fellowship program. He is known for his lectures and has served as an invited lecturer nationally and internationally.
