Biography

James Tilley is a Professor of Politics at the Department of Politics and International Relations (DPIR) at the University of Oxford, and a Fellow at Jesus College. His research primarily focuses on public opinion and electoral behavior, with a particular emphasis on circumstances under which voters blame governments for policy failures and their willingness to absolve governments of responsibility for various problems. Tilley published a significant work in 2014, co-authored with Sara Hobolt, examining responsibility and accountability at the EU level in his book 'Blaming Europe'. He has explored the impact of social cleavages—such as class and religion—on party choice, and in 2017, he published 'New Politics Class', documenting changes in British political parties over the last 60 years, notably the increased abstention among working-class voters. His ongoing research interests include the effects of aging on political attitudes, Northern Irish electoral behavior, economic voting, and political trust.
