Biography

James Weimer is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Vanderbilt University. He is a member of the Institute for Software Integrated Systems and the Vanderbilt Institute for Surgery Engineering. His research focuses on developing foundational tools and safety guarantees for predictable performance in learning-enabled cyber-physical systems (CPS), primarily targeting the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) and autonomous vehicles (AVs). Weimer's work addresses challenges arising from real-world data constraints, such as unmodeled variability, dataset shifts, anomalies, and sensing limitations. He seeks to overcome these data constraints by improving data generation, experimental design, data efficiency, and novel analysis techniques. Weimer is also a co-founder of Neuralert Technologies and Vasowatch. His contributions to the field include the Neuralert stroke detector, which was recognized as a TIME 2022 Invention in the Medical Care category, and a paper in the ACM Transactions on Embedded Computing Systems. He has received a Phase 1 NIH STTR Grant and has been a finalist for the IEEE/ACM CHASE Paper Award. Moreover, his project 'Reducing Social Isolation' was funded by the NSF SCC, and the Neuralert stroke detector has been designated as a breakthrough device by the FDA.
