Biography

James S. Whitehead is a Lecturer in Law at the University of Chicago Law School. With over 42 years of experience, he practiced employment and labor law at the Chicago office of Sidley Austin LLP. His career included clerking for the Honorable John Paul Stevens on the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. Mr. Whitehead received his BA degree from Yale University, graduating magna cum laude and as a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and earned his JD from the University of Chicago Law School, graduating cum laude and as a member of the Order of Coif. He has extensive experience in employment litigation in federal and state courts, as well as administrative agencies, dealing with cases involving discrimination, harassment, wage and hour claims, and federal and state statutory and common law claims. He has represented national railroads in employment labor relations cases arising under the Railway Labor Act and various transportation statutes. Mr. Whitehead has handled over 60 employment labor cases at the appellate level, including cases before the United States Supreme Court and nine federal circuit courts of appeals.
