Dr. James Whitman

Biography

James Q. Whitman is the Ford Foundation Professor of Comparative Foreign Law at Yale Law School. His academic focus includes Comparative Law, Intellectual History, and Legal History. He has been influential in the analysis of legal traditions and the evolution of legal principles in different jurisdictions. Whitman holds a J.D. from Yale Law School and a Ph.D. in Intellectual History from the University of Chicago. He also earned an M.A. from Columbia University and a B.A. from Yale University. Throughout his career, Whitman has taught various law courses, including Advanced Topics in Comparative Law, Ancient Law, Art Law, Criminal Law, and Developing Western Legal Tradition. His research often explores the intersection of legal cultures and the historical context of legal frameworks.
